Honeymoon: Day Two, NICE

Jessica, September 9 2010: We were in the pool by 7:30 am. It is indoor/outdoor with mosaic tiles all round. Inside it is a low, filled-to-the-brim pool in a dark, Roman-eque room. Swim through plastic flaps to the outside portion: a semi-circle under bright sky and surrounded by dark wicker lounge chairs, which themselves are surrounded (one level up) by the terrace restaurant.

That is where we ate breakfast. Delicious! Sausages bursting with flavour, tomatoes grilled and stuffed with bread crumbs, salmon that tastes like it was plucked from the ocean moments before, country oranges so sweet, brie, gouda, goat's cheese, fresh bread and pastries, a sour cherry tart that melts like butter ...

After breakfast we walked around a bit - JK is obsessed with shoes and shoe stores here.

Then we went down to the beach. It was sizzling hot, stretched out on those pebbles, listening to the waves. We read, slept, swam. The water is a beautiful blue and impossibly salty. It was a delicious feeling. Wave-y water. We dropped out suits and towels off at the hotel (right across the street) and had lunch at a little bistro on a pedestrian street called Love. Two coffees, one shared beer and one massive salade nicoise.

Everyone smokes here; we are constantly surrounded by it. All the tables in the restaurants and cafes, inside and out. It is some kind of torture for me, akin to refraining from cheese here in the heart of cheese-land.

Anyway, after lunch we took the bus to the Matisse Museum. There is a temporary exhibit on his muse, Lydia. Nearby, we walked around the site of ancient Roman ruins and through an olive grove.

Yes, olive trees! There were men playing Bocci Ball in the park next to it. Beautiful afternoon.

We took the bus back to the hotel , or close enough to walk through the old town and down Promenade Des Etats-Uni and back to our room.

I fell asleep, though I didn't mean to.

We ate cheese and drank wine in our room before going to dinner downstairs. The dress code is "smart casual." What does that mean?

I had lobster with risotto (yum!) and JK had seafood scampi. Today: Monaco.

So far, I love Nice.
