Jessica, Sept. 14 2010: Changed hotels this morning - the Sirene was full tonight - and settled nicely into Da Vice, a small, tidy roof-top room in one of the narrow, winding cobblestone streets of Monterosso.
Had a minor heart attack when we thought our Euro-Rail passes had been lost (!!) but they had simple fallen behind the desk in our old room. Reserved our trip to Asti for tomorrow, where we'll see Flavia, and to Venice for the following day, where we'll explore the famous city.
After breakfast (espresso, cappuccino, focaccia and fruit) we started on the footpath to the nearest village, Vernazza. It was a punishing two hour hike, in fact, up steep and crumbling stone stairs, through ripening vineyards and lush jungle-like forest. Sweat and sunburn as a result. The reward: Vernazza, a treasure.
We lay on the beach, immediately exhausted. Then we swam. There are dolphins here, though we haven't seen any yet. We bought pizza and cans of cold beer, scrambled high onto a flat rock overlooking this turqoise ocean, and feasted in the sun. Read our books. Snuggled. Swam again.
Now, what? It's 6:00 pm.
Also stopped at an internet cafe and sent quick message to Flavia and our families.
I would like mussels and lasagne al pesto again.
